The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.
- William Arthur Ward
A teacher truly inspires students life. Teacher helps to nurture the seeds, which later on grow into trees. They nourish these seeds by imparting values, morals, education and knowledge. Teachers are the individuals who make all other professions by molding the young minds for years together.
Each and everyone’s life has been carved by many teachers, whom we have meet in our life’s journey. And there will always be one special teacher amongst them. One such great teacher was Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In his remembrance we celebrate “Teacher’s Day”.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, at Tiruttani, near Madras, in South India. He had a multi-faceted personality. He was a scholar, renowned professor, orator, able administrator, creative writer, well-known philosopher, diplomat, statesman and patriot. His contribution towards education is breathtaking and he staunchly believed that education possessed the power to alleviate all the problems affecting our society. He did not believe in education just for the sake of it. On the contrary according to him it was important to develop a proper bent of mind, the right attitude and a true spirit of democracy, which are the pre-requisites for building responsible citizens. He felt that "Unless we have dedicated and committed teachers to take teaching as a mission in their lives, a good educational system cannot be developed." The goal should be towards commitment to knowledge, advancement of learning, improving the quality of education and fostering of a strong relationship between teachers and students.
Radhakrishnan was, and still is, one of the most celebrated writers of the present generation. His works are many and varied on philosophical, theological, ethical, educational, social and cultural subjects. He contributed numerous articles to different well-known journals, which will prove to be of immense value for generations to come.
According to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan higher education, should provide leadership in politics, administration, profession, industry and commerce. The universities should train minds to bring together material resources and human energies. Hence education should train for self-development, fearlessness of mind, and integrity of purpose and strength of conscience. He believed that “education should be liberating and life-giving".
The Honorable President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam also shares the similar views as Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He has taught at Anna University as a Professor for Technology & Societal Transformation. He envisages India as a developed nation by 2020. The President believes that the nation would be developed if the young minds of the nation were stimulated.
Some of the visions shared by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in his book “Ignited Minds” are:
- A nation’s wealth is the Young generation of the country. Mother, father and Elementary School Teachers play a very important part as role models. When the child grows up, the role models will be national leaders of quality and integrity in every field including politics, the sciences, technology and industry.
- “Vision ignites the mind of the young children. India needs visionaries of the stature of J.R.D. Tata, Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan and Dr. Verghese Kurien, to name a few, who can involve an entire generations in mission-driven programmes which benefit the country as a whole. The teachers serve as the best visionaries as they can influence children at a very young age” this view of Dr. Kalam has been also supported by an Ancient Chinese proverb i.e. "A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark".
- The President adds further in the same book “we as a nation need to use the abundant national resources both materialistic as well as human resources to the fullest. The teachers need to make the children aware about how to use these resources effectively and make use of them to the fullest. Thus, teacher plays a significant role in shaping and molding a child’s life.
Finally in the book Dr. Kalam states, “A teacher once said, give me a five year old child. After seven years, no God or Devil will be able to change the child.”
All of us have come across such good teachers in our life, who have inspired and motivated us. Hence, we at KidZee would like to pay our tributes to the teacher the architect of the future.
